Focal Areas - Biodiversity

Biodiversity conservation naturally constitutes one of GEF SGP Malaysia’s largest portfolio, as Malaysia is listed as one of the world’s 12 Mega-Biodiverse countries. SGP interventions to address problems related to biodiversity should in general be designed to undertake activities aimed at mitigating the loss of biodiversity be it on land, or in freshwater/marine/coastal water, caused by either the destruction of habitats, sources of point of diffused pollution, and or over-exploitation of natural resources.


Criteria:

In accordance with any of the of following GEF Operational Programmes.

Should be located in an area that contains significant biodiversity, where the ecosystem or constituent species is threatened or at risk.

  • OP1 – Arid and Semi-Arid Ecosystems
  • OP2 – Coastal, Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems
  • OP3 – Forest Ecosystems
  • OP4 – Mountain Ecosystems
  • OP13 – Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity Important to Agriculture
