The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme make grants to NGOs and CBOs in
the following five themes :

1. Biological Diversity
…to support or promote the conservation and sustainable use and management of biodiversity in ecosystems, including agrobiodiversity and agroecological systems.

2. Climate Change
…is a change of climate attributed directly or indirectly to human activities that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and which is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods.

3. International Waters
…targets transboundary water systems, such as river basins with water flowing from one country to another, groundwater resources shared by several countries, or marine ecosystems bounded by more than one nation.

4. Land Degradation
…primarily deforestation and desertification in relation to the loss of biological diversity, climate change and the pollution of international waters.

5. Persistent Organic Pollutants
…are among the most dangerous pollutants released in the environment, focusing on 12 POPs of immediate concern, often referred to as “the dirty dozen”.
